Wayne County Board of Education moves forward on renovations to Bell Elementary

The Wayne County Board of Education agreed to take the next step in making some needed renovations regarding HVAC and roof replacement at Bell Elementary School, during their monthly meeting on February 15th.
The HVAC project will include new air conditioning, heating, new ceilings, and lighting. Codell Construction is managing the project which is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. The construction team is scheduled to begin demo on March 8th by removing the ceiling in the wing towards the bus pick up area. Remaining federal Elementary and Secondary school Emergency Relief (ESSER) funding is covering the cost of this project.
The board set the construction in progress by approving pay request #1 for the Bell Elementary HVAC renovation project (BG 23-333) in the amount of $68,846.93.The board also approved a pay invoice to GRW Engineering for $2,836.30 for professional services in relation to Bell’s HVAC project.
The roof replacement for Bell was also acted on by the board. After hearing a presentation on the design of the roof project by Alan Brown, project manager for Deco Architects, the board approved there lease of the construction documents for the start of the bid process.
In addition, the board approved to pay an invoice to Deco Architects, Inc. for $38,812.50 for professional services in regard to the roof replacement project.
The board also approved the 2024-25 school calendar, based on a school calendar committee’s proposal. The first day of school for students will be August 14. The calendar includes a fall break October 7-11, Thanksgiving break November 27-29, Christmas break December 19-January 1, and spring break March 31-April 4. The last day for students is set for May 20.
In other business:
*Approved the 2024-25 allocation formulas.
*Approved pay request #12 for the ongoing WCHS Gym Indoor Air Quality Improvement Project (BG 22-222) for $294,637.96.
*Approved a School Facilities Construction Commission (SFCC) Offer of Assistance for $56,162.58.
*Approved the ERATE eligible items for Internal Connections and Telecommunications.
*Received an informative report from Wayne County Family Resource Youth Services Center (FRYSC) Coordinator Melissa Gossage on the FRYSCs across the district with each center’s staff member being recognized with a certificate for being such an asset to Wayne County Schools’ students and families. They are instrumental in removing barriers to learning for Wayne County students.
